The effect of body fatness on energetic efficiency and fasting heat production in adult sheep.

چکیده
The effect of body fatness on the fasting heat production and energetic efficiency of adult sheep was studied. Energy balance and heat production were determined in adult wether sheep at three fatness levels given a diet of grass hay and maize at four feeding levels, including fasting, in open-circuit respiration chambers. The sheep weighted approximately 60 kg at the start and were fed over a period of 4-7 months to obtain one of three levels of body fatness: fat 90 kg, medium 70 kg and thin 55 kg. Neither the digestibility nor the metabolizability of the diet was affected by body fatness or feeding level. Average fasting heat production was 6.47, 7.00 and 8.20 MJ/d for the thin, medium and fat sheep respectively, but when expressed as a multiple of metabolic body size (kg W0.75) remained constant at 0.31 MJ/kg W0.75. At each level of feeding the fat sheep produced most heat, but when heat production was expressed as a multiple of fasting heat production or metabolic body size, the differences due to level of fatness disappeared. Heat increment was not affected by fatness and there was no suggestion that energy utilization was improved by loss of condition. It is concluded that white adipose tissue is highly active and contributes significantly to the maintenance energy requirements of adult sheep. Metabolic body size is a good unit of reference for comparison of energy metabolism in adult animals of the same species but varying in body size.

Predicting the effects of body fatness on food intake and performance of sheep.
Adipose tissue produces signals that can have a profound effect on many physiological functions, including energy expenditure and food intake. The hypothesis that variation in food intake of sheep resulting from differences in animal fatness can be predicted from effects of animal fatness on energetic efficiency was subjected to three tests. First, an existing food intake model was adapted to a...
متن کاملComparison of feeding value of a treated sea plant, Posidonia australis, with lucerne, pasture and wheat
An experiment was carried out to compare the effect of feeding posidonia australis as a non-conventional feedstuff with cereal straw for sheep maintenance; and to compare seagrass/chicken litter with lucerne hay and pasture for sheep production on a scale such as would be applicable to lot-feeding of sheep in the area of suthern Australia in case of short term feed scarcity. To approach this ta...
متن کاملFasting heat production of Muzaffarnagari sheep
Twelve adult Muzaffarnagari rams (mean weight 41.4 2.09) were used to study fasting heat production (FHP) using open circuit respiration calorimetry. After a maintenance level of feeding for 60, sheep were fasted for three days and later subjected to gaseous exchange studies for 72±96 h. Mean oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide and methane production (l/d) and urinary nitrogen excretion (g/d) va...
متن کاملThe fasting metabolism of adult wether sheep.
The heat produced when an animal is fasted in an environment which is neither too hot nor too cold to cause increases in metabolism is a measure of the energy needed to maintain that animal. When man is the subject, muscular repose can invariably be assured and the measurement of heat production is termed the basal metabolism. Most animals do not co-operate in the way that man does and their he...
